Does André Derain, historic father of fauvism with Vlaminck, and one of the most exhibited French artist in the world, need introduction? His paintings reached astronomical prices (19.5 million euros for Trees in Collioure at Sotheby’s in 2010). But he also was a remarkable draughtsman–and the sanguine drawing presented here remind Apollinaire’s analysis: “Derain’s art is now imprinted with this expressive greatness one might call ancient.”
