“Le monde selon André Maire” (‘The world according to André Maire’) exhibition held in Saint-Briac in the summer of 2016 reminded us of what a marvellous artist this man trained by Émile Bernard was. He was literally a travelling painter, celebrated for his exotic gouaches which earned him the nickname “Gauguin of the poor”. This exceptional ink wash painting presented here is one of the rare testimonies of his brief stay in Bruges, in 1929. This was a time when he relentlessly cultivated his natural gift as a great draughtsman.
