Claude Viallat

Founding member of the Supports/Surfaces movement, Claude Viallat, born in Nîmes in 1936, studied at the Fine Arts School of Montpellier from 1955 to 1959, then at the Fine Arts School of Paris in 1962 and in 1963 at Raymond Legueult’s workshop. In 1966, teacher in his turn, he adopts an imprint based process, which enrols him in a radical critique of lyrical and geometrical abstraction of the time. His famous imprint, immediately recognizable, is a neutral form, repeated on a frameless canvas, determining the work’s composition…
